FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JULY 30, 2014
On July 30, 2014, the City of Bethlehem Police Department arrested a 15 year old JUVENILE for Robbery, Recklessly Endangering Another Person and Harassment. The JUVENILE is presently being held in Northampton County Juvenile Detention on those charges.
At 0005 hours, the JUVENILE assaulted and attempted to rob a male victim, age 36, who was walking home from work. This occurred at the intersection of New Street and Union Blvd.
The JUVENILE walked past the victim and asked for a lighter. The victim replied he had none and continued walking. A short time later, the JUVENILE assaulted the victim from behind, knocking the victim to the ground where he attempted to remove the victim’s wallet and cell phone. The victim attempted to fight back. The victim suffered minor injures.
An off-duty Pennsylvania State Police Trooper, Trooper Louis Rosenthal, was jogging in the area and observed what was happening. The Trooper ran over to aid the victim. The JUVENILE got off the victim and fled. The off-duty Trooper chased that JUVENILE a short distance and lost him.
Bethlehem Police Officers arrived in the area and set up a perimeter around the area where the Trooper lost the JUVENILE. Officers observed some broken wood fence parts and found the JUVENILE hiding under the rear deck of a home in the unit block of West Garrison Street. The JUVENILE was taken into custody without incident at this location and identified.
The JUVENILE, who is 15 years old, is currently being held in Northampton County Juvenile Detention facing Court action. The investigation by City Detectives is active and ongoing with the possibility of additional charges, relative to other incidents, being filed at a later time.
Trooper Rosenthal’s assistance and cooperation in this crime was outstanding. The Trooper was off duty and out jogging. The Trooper saw a crime being committed and immediately intervened thus stopping the assault and robbery of a citizen, and stopping the possibility of serious bodily injury to that citizen. With the Trooper’s assistance and cooperation, a robbery suspect was apprehended by Police. Thank You.
