JUNE 4, 2014

To increase Police Presence on Main Street and the Downtown area during weekend hours, there will be an expanded police initiative starting this weekend.

Staring this Friday, June 6, 2014 and Saturday, June 7, 2014, there will be extra Police Patrols on Main Street between the hours of 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Some of these Police Officers will be on foot walking the downtown beat. Some Officers will be on Police Bicycles patrolling on bike. The Mounted Unit will also be out during these times, expanding their normal patrol hours on horseback.

These Officers will focus on traffic, parking and safety issues on Main Street during this time period. Between those hours, many citizens visit the Main Street area to shop and dine at the many businesses, shops, restaurants and hotel. The Officers are there for their safety and protection. The Officers, as always, will be speaking with shop owners and managers to prevent/deter any potential issues or incidents. “Public safety is a key component of economic development. It is my belief that public safety serves as an important catalyst in promoting the city’s livability and its ability to attract further economic growth.” expressed Mayor Donchez

Since we re-started the Beat back in April 2014, I have heard from many people how they like the Officers and their presence their. I have heard this from merchants and average citizens. Starting this weekend, by readjusting work schedules and hours, and utilizing special units, there will be added beat officers on foot, bicycle and horseback every Friday night and Saturday night between the hours of 7pm to 11pm, from June to the end of August…all summer.

This does not replace our daily beat officers who will work both sides of the river, north side and south side beat from 1130am to 7pm Monday thru Saturday. In mid July, this expanded initiative will be reviewed and if it is working and has good police and public support, we will expand it thru September 2014, possibly into early October. By mid October, outside dining and activities, are usually at a minimum due to the change in weather.

The effort here is simple….To serve the citizens of City of Bethlehem and visitors, and to make your visit to this City a healthy and happy one. This cooperative initiative, with support from citizens and merchants, shows that when Police, businesses and citizens work together, we can make a difference, and make the City of Bethlehem a safe place to live, do business, raise a family and visit.

If you have any questions on this, please contact the Office of the Chief of Police. Thank You.

Mark A. DiLuzio
