West Bethlehem Shooting Press Release

On Saturday evening, June 29, 2013, at 10:18 PM, the Bethlehem Police 911 Center received calls of a shooting at 744 Eighth Ave., Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Lehigh County.

A 21 year old male was transported to St. Lukes University Hospital by Bethlehem City Paramedics. The male victim subsequently passed away at the hospital from his injures.

The shooting is under investigation by the City of Bethlehem Police Department, the Lehigh County District Attorneys’ Office and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office.

Information Regarding Major Case

JUNE 28, 2013

On June 15, 2013 Bethlehem Police responded to St Lukes University Hospital in Fountain Hill, Pa to take a report from a female alleging she was held against her will over a period of multiple weeks, beaten, and sexually assaulted at a rooming house located at 826 Montclair Ave Bethlehem, Pa 18015.

As the Investigation progressed Bethlehem Police Detectives obtained an arrest warrant from Magisterial District Justice James Narlesky charging Steven Kitchell, 34 year old male, with the following offenses:

2901(a)(1) Kidnapping  – F1

2701(a)(1) Simple Assault – M2

2903(a) False Imprisonment – M2

3121(a)(1) Rape – F1

3124.1 Sexual Assault – F2

3126(a)(1) Indecent Assault – M2

On June 17, 2013 a search warrant obtained from Magisterial District Justice Nancy Matos Gonzalez was served at the Montclair St address by members of the Departments Emergency Response Team as well as members of the Departments Criminal Investigations Unit, and Special Operations Vice Unit and Street Crimes Unit.  Kitchell was not located at the residence.

Information was developed that Kitchell had fled to New Jersey.  With the assistance of the United States Marshals Service and police agencies from the State of New Jersey, Steven Kitchell has been located and taken into custody.

UPDATED INFORMATION

On June 26, 2013 Kitchell was taken into custody at 307 14th Ave Newark NJ by the City of Newark Police Fugitive Squad.

He is being held in NJ pending extradition back to Northampton County.  Extradition is being handled by the Northampton County District Attorneys Office.

On June 26, 2013 the City of Bethlehem Police Department was recognized by the Pennsyvania Chiefs of Police and Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC) with their State Accreditation.

The Police Department was recently assessed to ensure their policies and procedures met the State and National standards associated with Law Enforcement operations.  The accreditation efforts were spearheaded by Lt. William Dosedlo but could not have been possible without the assistance and efforts of all members of the Department, both sworn and un-sworn.

This is the City of Bethlehem Police Department’s third State Accreditation.  The Police Department is one of only ninety three police agencies that hold PLEAC certification and the largest municipal police agency in the state that holds both state (PLEAC) and national (CALEA) accreditation.

Stolen Bike: Have You Seen Me?

A burglary was committed in the first week of June 2013 on Bethlehem’s South Side, during which a very unique mountain bike was taken.  This bike is a hardtail Specialized carbon fiber Stumpjumper 29er.  The bike is carbon silver in color (a similar model is pictured below) and is worth several thousand dollars.

The bike is marked with part number 9113-4921.  The owner of this bike upgraded the tires and pedals on the bike.  The tires are Bontrager T.I. (Team Issued) and the bike has Shimano clipless pedals.

JAG Grant Public Meeting

The Bethlehem Police Department will make its fiscal year 2013 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) application available to the City of Bethlehem Council for its review and comment on 16 July 2013.  The opportunity for public comment on the JAG Grant application will be given by Bethlehem City Council at a public meeting on 16 July 2013 in conjunction with Council passing a Resolution at the same meeting authorizing Bethlehem’s Mayor to execute the grant award documents.

Burglary Ring Broken Up

BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA

JUNE 13, 2013

Allentown and Bethlehem Police Department personnel along with the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office announced the arrest of five individuals involved in a number of burglaries throughout the Lehigh Valley.

Following an investigation by Allentown Police and Bethlehem Police Detectives, a criminal complaint and affadavit of probable cause was filed charging JEAN CARLOS IRIZARRY RODRIGUEZ, 22, and ANTHONY RODRIGUEZ-PAGAN, 18, both formerly of 417 ½ W. Tilghman St., Allentown; HIRAM RODRIGUEZ JR., 23, formerly of 1910 Gatewood Lane, Bethlehem; ANTHONY RICHARD MACHADO, 23, no known address; and KYLE MEDINA, 18, of 918 Main St., Apartment 6, Bethlehem with a number of burglaries throughout the Lehigh Valley.

The items stolen included firearms, coins, jewlery, and electronics totaling an estimated $83,000.

Charges include multiple counts of Burglary as well as Attempted Burglary and Conspiracy.  IRIZARRY-RODRIGUEZ and MACHADO are in Lancaster County Prison.  RODRIGUEZ-PAGAN and RODRIGUEZ JR. are in Lehigh County Prison.

There will be Public Works crews and surveyors in the area between five points and Broadhead St on Monday 6/10 between 9am-3pm causing lane restrictions and delays.

PennDot will be patching potholes on Easton Ave between Elizabeth Ave through Bethlehem Township next Monday 6/10 -Thursday 6/13.

UGI will be working in the area of N New St and Elizabeth Ave beginning Monday 6/10.  It will require lane closures.

Armed Crossing Guard Photo

On Sunday June 2nd a photograph of a City of Bethlehem Police Department Crossing Guard was posted on Facebook.  It was alleged that the Crossing Guard was wearing a firearm while performing his duties.

The City of Bethlehem Police Department investigated this incident and learned the Crossing Guard was wearing a pistol.  The investigation also revealed there was no violation of the law.

The City and the Bethlehem Area School District are in agreement that from this point forward Crossing Guards will not be permitted to carry weapons while performing their duties.

This matter is closed with no further action being taken.

HIT AND RUN WITH ARREST

JUNE 7, 2013

On June 6, 2013 at approximately 2226 hours a report of a hit and run crash involving 2 pedestrians was received in the 300 Block of Broadway.  Two individuals, a 21 year old male and 18 year old female, were struck by a SUV which then fled the area.  Both individuals suffered serious injuries and were transported to St Lukes University Hospital in Fountain Hill for treatment.

Officers located a vehicle matching the description of the hit and run vehicle in the area of the 700 block Dakotah St.  The vehicle had substantial front end damage.

Through further investigation Officers identified the operator of the vehicle as Willie Brickhouse, 61 Year Old Male.  Brickhouse was arrested and charged with 2 counts of Accidents Involving Death or Personal Injury.  He was arraigned before Magesterial District Judge Hawk and committed to Northampton County Prison on $10,000 bail.

HIT AND RUN OF 7 YEAR OLD

The City of Bethlehem Police is seeking information about a vehicle that struck and seriously injured a young boy and then fled the scene.

When:  Monday, June 3rd, 2013 at about 8 P.M.

Where:  E.   8th St and Rapp St in South Bethlehem

Vehicle/Suspect information:  The vehicle of interest is a maroon Nissan Quest type SUV/Mini-van.  It may have light colored trim and “R.I.P Joseph” on the rear window.  The driver of the vehicle was reported to be a Hispanic female with dark hair and blonde highlights.  There may have also been two Black males in the vehicle.  It was reported that the female driver stopped, told the child he would be O.K., and then fled the scene.
