In Memory: Retired Sergeant John Shivek

Members of the Bethlehem Police Department are mourning the loss of retired Sergeant John Shivek, aged 95 years, who passed away on Monday March 4, 2013.  The obituary in the Morning Call indicates that John was the husband of the late Helen (Hrivnak) Shivek, who died in 1995.  Born in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Joseph and Eva (Borda) Shivek Toth and a stepson of the late Alex Toth.

John Shivek was born in Bethlehem on 11 December 1917 and served the citizens of the Bethlehem as a police officer starting on 01 August 1950.  He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in April of 1968.  He continued to serve as a supervisor for the next twelve years, retiring from service on 04 February 1980, after 30 years of service to the citizens of Bethlehem.

We would like to honor Sergeant Shivek’s long service to our great city and thank him for his many years of dedication.  In his memory, officers will be wearing a black mourning band across their badges until after his memorial service on Saturday March 9th.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday March 9th at Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden Street, Bethlehem, PA.  Calling hours will begin at 10 a.m. until the time of the service.  A memory tribute may be placed at

  1. Good old number 9. (badge #). he use to patrol my neighborhood. He would take me on ride along’s. He was one of the best.His kindly ways will be missed. It because of him i give respect to bethlehem police. His mentoring of us kids in the neighborhood helped me to grow up and keep out of trouble. He will be sadly missed. Thank you number 9 for helping me become a better person.
