Burglary Prevention: What you can do

Bethlehem, PA

While reviewing our crime statistics, something alarming became apparent about our residential burglaries. More of our burglaries are committed WITHOUT FORCE than with it.  This means that over half of the time, a criminal has nothing to even slow their progress toward stealing your belongings.

In fact, so far in Bethlehem in 2012 there have been 114 burglaries committed without force and 109 that required force.  The important point here is that something can be done by you to reduce the number of non-forcible burglaries.  Primarily, this includes locking doors and closing garage doors, even when you are home.  A surprising number of these non-forcible burglaries are committed in the middle of the day, the bulk of which occur between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.  We are constantly amazed that some victims don’t realize how easy they made it for the criminals.

Our experience has shown that a significant number of criminals who conduct such crimes will look for easy targets and strike when one is found.  Valuable property that is left unsecured in plain view is an easy target.  Please remember this when leaving anything of value within easy view of a passerby.  For more helpful tips on securing your property, see our previous guest blog post, 4 Ways to Help Police Spot Predators Outside Your Home.

  1. The number of home burglaries traditionally spike in the summer months. Light timers and Fake TV are excellent solutions to deter burglars. Also, playing anti-theft home occupancy sounds MP3 or a CD (sells on Amazon) in home while away is great way to trick burglar that someone is in.
