Musikfest 2012 Police Activity: The Final Report

Bethlehem, PA

Musikfest 2012 is over and our city has begun to resume normal activity.  This year, we are pleased to announce that we experienced a significant downturn in arrest activity.  Mayor John Callahan stated, “Public safety is always a priority in the city.  Bethlehem is the safest city in Pennsylvania and we want to ensure that Musikfest is the safest festival in Pennsylvania.  If you are going to welcome over a million people to Bethlehem, we certainly want them to feel safe.”

Over the entire festival, the Bethlehem Police Department arrested just forty-three people.  Charges were filed against people for the offenses of Public Drunkenness (22), Underage Drinking (19), Disorderly Conduct (8), Narcotics Violations (4), Criminal Mischief (4), Trespassing (2), Harassment (1) and Scattering Rubbish (1).  These numbers indicate the number of times each charge was brought against someone.  At times, one arrest resulted in multiple charges being filed against the same person.

The numbers indicate that arrests for Disorderly Conduct have decreased from (33) last year.  Underage Drinking and Public Drunkenness arrests have remained relatively steady over the past two years.

The arrests for the first three days of Musikfest 2012 are detailed here, and the second three days here.

Below is a chart that compares the offenses from 2011 Musikfest to that of the offenses charged in 2012.  It is clear that we experienced a dramatic downturn in the number of Disorderly Conduct arrests.  This is the offense that usually results from people fighting.  We experienced far fewer violent offenses and fights between youths.
