Breaking News: Citizen tip helps lead police to robbery arrests

Bethlehem, PA

An alert member of our community contacted Bethlehem police last evening to report the possible identity of one of the armed robbers who is responsible for the Lehigh Valley’s recent robbery crime spree as detailed in our recent posts here and here.

On Tuesday July 18th, the City of Bethlehem Police Department, along with the Palmer Township Police Department released information through the Bethlehem Police blog and the local media relating to the recent convenience store armed robberies.  We released surveillance photos of the robbery suspects along with all other pertinent information we had available to us.  We were seeking the assistance of the community in identifying these individuals.  Bethlehem Police Detectives received a tip from a citizen who identified one fo the male armed robbery suspects.  This information proved to be essential in assisting police in this investigation.  Detectives used this information to conduct surveillance and attempt to gather further information so that arrests could be made.

On early Wednesday morning, July 18th, 2012 at 3:02 a.m., a Bethlehem Police officer on surveillance of overnight businesses, observed suspicious male in the area of the 7-11 Store at Linden Street and Macada Road in the City of Bethlehem, Northampton County.  Officers from our Fourth Platoon, the Street Crimes Unit and Bethlehem detectives organized a perimeter of the area.  When uniformed officers approached the male, he immediately fled on foot.  During the ensuing foot chase, the male discarded a handgun and bandana that are consistent with ones used in the commission of the previous robberies.

During the foot pursuit, a motor vehicle was observed by our officers that was attempting to leave the area.  This vehicle was stopped by officers and two females and one male were detained.  Through subsequent investigation by detectives, it was established that these individuals along with the male who fled on foot, were in the process of robbing the 7-11 Store at Linden St and Macada Road.  Further investigation by detectives indicated that these individuals are involved in multiple other armed robberies in both Palmer Township and the City of Bethlehem.  Detectives are actively working this investigation and charges are expected to be filed later today in Northampton County.

This investigation is coming to a successful conclusion, in part, due to the cooperation of members of the community in providing valuable and accurate information to the police to help us identify the responsible persons.  We have also been successful due to the tireless work of officers and detectives from both the Bethlehem Police and Palmer Township Police Department.  The officers of the Bethlehem Police Department who have worked hard overnight to ensure the safety of our community also deserve our appreciation.  Thank you all for a job well done.

Anyone with additional information relating to this joint investigation, please contact Detective Seregant Tim Ruoff, Palmer Township Police department at 610.253.3556 ext 211 and/or Bethlehem Police Detective Moses Miller, 610.997.7674 or Detective Jason Fulmer, 610.997.7682.

We will be releasing further information and the identities of the arrested parties when they have been arraigned.
