On-line registration announced for the City of Bethlehem 2012 Citizens’ Academy Course
Bethlehem, Pa. – (January 31, 2012) – Mayor Callahan and the City of Bethlehem are pleased to announce that on-line registration will begin on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. for the third Citizens’ Academy program. Classes for the spring 2012 session will begin on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 and will take place at various working locations within the City.
The Citizens’ Academy is a program designed to inform citizens about how their local government operates. Participants enrolled in the Citizens’ Academy will attend one, two-hour session per week, for 11 weeks. During each session, participants will view in-depth presentations and demonstrations of the inner workings of local government.
Those who are interested in applying for the Citizens’ Academy program may do so online by visiting www.bethlehem-pa.gov/about/citizensacademy/. The program is limited to 25-persons per session.
“The City of Bethlehem Citizen’s Academy, is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania, to the best of my knowledge. It is an initiative I started in 2009 as a ten-week course sought to in increase transparency in the way the City operates, while at the same time expanding the city’s volunteer capacity and building a new generation of leaders in Bethlehem. I am pleased to report that the initiative continues to be an overwhelming success,” Mayor Callahan said.
He added, “The purpose of the Citizen’s Academy was to give a small group of residents a bird’s eye view of what we do. Citizen participation input is critical to understand how we are delivering our city services and in a world of limited budgets which services we should prioritize. It is the taxpayers’ dollars at work and they should have some say in how they are spent.”
